Square vs Shopify POS: which is better in 2026?

By [Author 1 — name to add]Payments & pricing analyst·Updated June 17, 2026·How we score

The verdict

Square and Shopify POS both start small and scale — but they're built from opposite ends. Square is in-person first with a genuinely free plan; Shopify is online first and is the best system for retailers who sell in-store and on the web from one synced catalog. If you don't use Shopify Payments, Shopify adds 0.6–2% per transaction.

Choose Square if your sales are mostly in person and you want a free start. Choose Shopify POS if e-commerce is central and you want true omnichannel sync — just budget for the Shopify plan plus the third-party-processor fee if you don't use Shopify Payments.

Where each one wins

Square is the better pure in-person POS: free to start, faster to set up, and cheaper for a shop or café that rarely sells online. Shopify POS is unmatched when online matters — one catalog, one inventory count, one customer list across web and counter. If you already run a Shopify store, adding Shopify POS is the obvious move; if you're in-person only, you're paying for omnichannel you won't use.

The processing catch

Square is locked to Square Payments at a flat rate. Shopify strongly prefers Shopify Payments and charges 0.6–2% extra per sale if you bring a third-party processor — a softer version of lock-in, but a real one. Neither lets you freely shop processors the way an open system does.

Frequently asked questions

Is Square or Shopify POS better?

Square is better for mostly-in-person businesses that want a free start; Shopify POS is better for retailers who sell online and in-store and want one synced catalog and inventory. If you don't use Shopify Payments, Shopify adds 0.6–2% per transaction.

Does Shopify POS charge extra for third-party processors?

Yes. Shopify adds roughly 0.6–2% per transaction if you use a payment processor other than Shopify Payments. Square doesn't offer that option at all — it's locked to Square Payments.

Can I use Shopify POS without an online store?

You can, but it's built around e-commerce, so you'd pay for omnichannel features you may not use. For in-person-only selling, Square's free plan is usually the cheaper, simpler choice.

Which is cheaper, Square or Shopify POS?

Square for in-person-only selling, thanks to its free plan. Shopify POS can be better value if you also sell online, because it replaces a separate e-commerce platform — but factor in the Shopify subscription and the off-network processing fee.
